What is your personal business philosophy?
To always start with an absolutely vital purpose -- such as a critical unmet medical need -- and then pursue this collaboratively and honestly. It's important to pay attention to the details without losing sight of the moral purpose.
How would you describe the focus of your career to date?
I've translated what I've learned from basic scientific research and human genetics into potential therapeutic approaches, focusing on unmet needs in degenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's disease.
What was your most compelling professional experience to date?
I have been most inspired by discussions with Alzheimer's disease patients and their families about therapeutic discovery research and why there is hope for the future.
What awards, accolades, professional successes are you most proud of?
I am by far most proud of having taken our basic science ideas that identify therapeutic targets and generating drugs that have a therapeutic impact.
What do you believe about the work Alector is doing?
Alector's breakthrough approach constitutes a promising path to effective therapies for patients who currently have no options at all.
